MRE report
I just had dinner. An MRE with the self heating packet.
I haven't had this kind of thing for a long time and thought I would test out as a meal. I had the Egg Omelet with veggies and cheese. Heating was vigorous--you could hear it boiling and see steam come out of it. Maybe dangerous if spilled on yourself. To heat up meal you have to open the heater pack and put maybe 1 oz of water in it--fill to the line. Place meal in on top of heater and fold over bag to keep heat in. Place bag with food back into box and wait 1-2 min. This sucker really heated the food right up. The Egg meal was OK not great but you would be happy for it if needed. Only drawback was I couldn't tear it open so I needed a Knife. Food was very warm not hot but definitely edible. Anyway I wanted to test this out and thought I'd let you know. Make your your bug out bag has a knife if MREs are part of it. E-A |

The price went up from $47.00 to $65.00 for a dozen.

Re: MRE report
I just bought some cases from:
www.MREdepot.com for 56/case. They are running a special for the next 2 weeks with everything 10% off. This is the same place I bought canned butter and cheese. If you decide to order anything from them, enter "Take10" ...no quote, no spaces....in the promo code box at checkout and it will recalulate the price. Seemed like good folks to deal with.....order got right out and they emailed me a copy of the invoice with tracking # promptly. |

Re: MRE report
I remember having to tear those bags apart with my bare hands, er, teeth. Annoying, but it can be done. I never cared for the omlette and I got really upset if I was stuck with the vegetarian meal, man, what a ripoff! I've heard it suggested that veggie meal was intended for POW's, I don't know if that's true or not but I'd believe it! Some of those MRE entrees are right tasty, as are many of the desserts and the mini bread loaf. I have always had a weakness for the fake cheese and stale crackers.
I usually just buy the entree or other component by itself instead of the whole bagged MRE. It is usually a bit cheaper and I swear MRE's are 99% pure packaging with one tiny morsel of food burried somewhere down deep within. It saves me the trouble of having to break down the MRE's myself and I usually get to pick and choose what I want myself when ordering. |
Re: MRE report
Just a reminder for those who store MREs as part of their SHTF preps: Rodent-proof! If things get SHTF bad, the rodent population is undoubtedly going to explode. Unfortunately, I can tell you from first-hand experience that rodents are crazy about MREs, and their style is to eat their way into a case, then quickly chew into every packet in the case, finding the ones they favor. A few rats in your basement could go through a couple of cases a night.
Oh wait...I didn't add my "don't eat these if you get migraines disclaimer." Ahem...don't eat MRE main entres if you get migraines or if you have to limit sodium intake. :albertein |
Re: MRE report
I have shopped at http://theepicenter.com/mre_military...dy_to_eat.html in the past and like them.
Also, they carry MRE Entrees and side dishes as opposed to buying the "complete" MRE. Best of luck to all. |

About those migraines/headaches. They're a mystery to me. I don't get them ever. whether I eat regular food, msg, mtn house or whatever. I never get them. Then again, I don't use any over the counter drugs. I'm convinced that they play a role in at least some of the medical problems that people are having..... |
Re: MRE report
Curious how old the MRE was and what kind of temps did you have it stored at?

That's not surprising, and they're still a mystery to science, too. Migraines are a neurological disease (or partly neurological, there may be other systems involved) that you either have or you don't. Headache is the most recognized symptom, but it's possible to have a migraine without the headache, and there's even a rare form of migraine in which the pain is abdominal. The headache accompanying migraine is very distinct from other types of headaches, and typically there is nausea and vomitting during the attack. Some people are lucky to only get them once in a while or in response to certain triggers or their headaches are so mild that they're not a real problem, but for many sufferers, migraine runs in cycles (every 6 days, for example) and the pain and nausea and other neurological effects (vision impairments, language impairments, amnesia, etc., during the attack) can be disabling. Women are plagued with them far worse than men are because fluctuations in estrogen and prostaglandins are major triggers. Migraine also tends to be hereditary. I always post the migraine message on food storage threads because most storage foods are loaded with modified food starch and that's a pretty strong trigger for many migraine sufferers, especially if it becomes part of a daily diet. One of the real dangers of repeated exposure to a migraine trigger is that migraine often patterns (or "kindles") once the attacks reach a certain frequency. Someone who only rarely had attacks and is exposed to a trigger often enough to have attacks a couple of times a month may well find himself or herself suffering ever increasing numbers of attacks on shorter cycles, often with the attacks growing in length. At that point, if the trigger is removed, the migraines will likely not go back down in frequency or severity. In other words, someone who didn't have a big problem with them before may end up becoming pretty much disabled by them if constantly exposed to a trigger, and removal of the trigger may not resolve the problem. (Many women who never got migraines before taking birth control pills have found themselves plagued with migraines forever after, despite going off the pill.) Women (the hormone thing) get migraines more often than men, but I notice it's often the men who are purchasing the storage food. I always worry that someone may buy a year's worth of Mountain House and MREs and find that his wife or daughter, who only get mild or infrequent migraines now, are unable to eat them or are risking disability. |

Re: MRE report
As long as we're on the subject, I'll weigh in on last night's fare--Mountain House freeze dried Sweet and Sour Pork. Initially tasted OK, kind of like a budget frozen entree. After a while, a taste/smell which I can only describe as similar to the overwhelming "artificial food" aroma in the Costco bakery overtook me. Kind of gross. In a real pinch, I'd eat it again, but I can't exactly vouch for this one.

Re: MRE report
That's a good deal if it is a quality manufacturer and they are not old.
